Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging tool used by specialist sonographers to provide real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and cartilage throughout the body. This can also be used to locate superficial foreign body and assess palpable soft tissue.
MSK - SHOULDER
During this scan, we evaluate the following structures:
- main rotator cuff tendons – supraspinatus, infraspinatus and subscapularis tendons
- long head of biceps tendon
- posterior glenohumeral joint
- superficial acromioclavicular joint
Common indications for the performance of a shoulder ultrasound scan are:
- rotator cuff tear/tendonopathy
- restricted range of movement
- pain on abduction

To evaluate any of the following structures where appropriate and symptomatic: – common extensor and flexor tendons; – medial ulnar collateral ligament; – lateral radial collateral ligament; – distal biceps tendon;

- elbow joints/olecranon fossa
Common indications for the performance of an elbow ultrasound scan are:
- ‘tennis’ or ‘golfers’ elbow/epicondylitis
- restricted range of movement, effusion/synovitis
