Musculoskeletal Scans - MSK

 

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is a powerful and painless tool used by specialized sonographers to provide real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and cartilage throughout the body.

MSK ultrasound is particularly helpful in the diagnosis of orthopedic and sports injuries such as rotator cuff tears, and chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Sometimes, pain or injury is triggered by movement, which cannot be captured in a static image. Ultrasound is performed in real time and can provide information that cannot be detected by any other imaging method. It has the added advantage of being radiation-free.

Our highly trained and qualified musculoskeletal sonographers perform the exams in a comfortable setting, using your feedback to help pinpoint the problem area. After the exam, your sonographer will send you an official medical report which you can forward to your doctor and fast-track any needed treatment.

 
 

MSK - SHOULDER


During this scan, we evaluate the following structures:

  • main rotator cuff tendons - supraspinatus, infraspinatus and subscapularis tendons

  • long head of biceps tendon

  • posterior glenohumeral joint

  • superficial acromioclavicular joint

Common indications for the performance of a shoulder ultrasound scan are:

  • rotator cuff tear/tendonopathy

  • restricted range of movement

  • pain on abduction

MSK - ELBOW

To evaluate any of the following structures where appropriate and symptomatic: - common extensor and flexor tendons; - medial ulnar collateral ligament; - lateral radial collateral ligament; - distal biceps tendon;

  • triceps tendon

  • cubital tunnel and ulnar nerve

  • elbow joints/olecranon fossa

Common indications for the performance of an elbow ultrasound scan are:

  • 'tennis' or 'golfers' elbow/epicondylitis

  • restricted range of movement, effusion/synovitis

  • distal biceps tendon tear

MSK - WRIST AND HAND


To evaluate any of the following structures where appropriate and symptomatic:

  • extensor and flexor tendos

  • joints of the hand/writst and metacarpophalangeal (MCP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP), distal interphalangeal (DIP) and carpometacarpal (CMC) joints

  • ligaments of the thumb/finger joints

  • Guyon's canal

Common indications for the performance of a wrist/hand ultrasound scan are:

  • Swelling ganglion

  • Effusion/ synovitis

  • Tendon tear

MSK - KNEE

This scan is used to evaluate:

  • quadriceps and patellar tendons

  • supra-patellar, pre-patellar, superficial and deep infra-patellar bursae

  • medial and lateral collateral ligaments

  • pes anserine tendons and bursa

  • iliotibial band

  • biceps femoris insertion

  • popliteal fossa

  • semimebranous/medial gastrocnemius tendons/bursa

Common indications:

  • effusion/synovitis

  • bursitis

  • popliteal cysts

  • quadriceps/patellar tendon tear
